Join Women with Pride for a special screening of The Watermelon Woman, Cheryl Dunye’s groundbreaking 1996 romantic comedy-drama and a landmark film in LGBTQ+ cinema.
Dunye stars as Cheryl, a young Black lesbian working at a video store who becomes fascinated by a Black actress from the 1930s known only as “The Watermelon Woman.” Her search to uncover the actress’s identity becomes a deeply personal exploration of race, sexuality, representation, history, and the stories of Black women that have too often been overlooked.
Written, directed, and edited by Cheryl Dunye, The Watermelon Woman was the first feature film directed by a Black lesbian and remains an influential work of queer cinema.
